Attractor States in Second Language Development

چکیده
Identifying changing patterns of stability and variability is crucial when examining second language development (SLD) from a complex dynamic systems theory (CDST) perspective (Larsen-Freeman, 2020). By studying attractor states, or recurrent stability, light can be shed on the underlying dynamics system (van Geert & Verspoor, 2015). In context SLD, states observed in individuals’ linguistic behaviors, as well learners’ interactions with others (Hiver, 2014; van As such, have been cited recent SLD literature (e.g., Amerstorfer, 2020; Evans Larsen-Freeman, Syed et al., 2021; Gillies Roger, 2022). The conceptual unpacking therefore invaluable for scholars seeking to enter realm CDST. Accordingly, serving stepping stone those looking foray into CDST paradigm, this forum piece offers definition state, identifies describes different types clarifies some possible misconceptions about provides few examples SLD.

We study the intrinsic properties of attractors in the Boolean dynamics in complex network with scale-free topology, comparing with those of the so-called random Kauffman networks. We have numerically investigated the frozen and relevant nodes for each attractor, and the robustness of the attractors to the perturbation that flips the state of a single node of attractors in the relatively small ...

This study examines the relationship between different types of conversational interaction and SLA. Long’s (1996) updated version of the interactionist hypothesis claims that implicit negative feedback, which can be obtained through negotiated interaction, facilitates SLA. Similar claims for the benefits of negotiation have been made by Pica (1994) and Gass (1997). Some support for the interact...
متن کاملSix principles of language development: implications for second language learners.
The number of children growing up in dual language environments is increasing in the United States. Despite the apparent benefits of speaking two languages, children learning English as a second language (ESL) often face struggles, as they may experience poverty and impoverished language input at home. Early exposure to a rich language environment is crucial for ESL children's academic success....
متن کاملThe Relationship between First and Second Language Literacy in Writing
This paper explores the ways in which the transfer of assumptions from first language (L1) writing can help the process of writing in second language (L2). In learning second language writing skills, learners have two primary sources from which they construct a second language system: knowledge and skills from first language and input from second language. To investigate the relative impact of ...
